Power window fix
« on: January 24, 2011, 19:42:12 »

I searched and didn't find a repair section for the power windows, so here goes

When we bought the latest 83' Fifth Avenue in December I noticed the driver's side rear window needed help to roll up. That is to say, if you didn't grab it and pull up, to help the motor, it wasn't going to go all the way up.

I knew the fix from previous Fifth Avenue and Fords (which use the exact same repair part by the way);

I pulled off the inner door panel and undid the three 3/8" bolts and unplugged the motor and removed it. Once I opened it up on the bench I noticed the three roll pins were no where to be seen;

That's what a used roll pin looks like. Pulled three out of an extra wrong side window motor I had.

Here's the three used pins loaded up with synthetic wheel bearing grease and about to go back together. Did it work ? Like a charm. Got to love the no cost repairs.

Takes no time at all

Good re-post. Got to do this myself and will look to see if it is similar in that app.

So a Ford part works?

Identical

I've robbed one for the other for years. In fact, if you ask for pins for a Chrysler they'll stand there and tell you they don't have any, so.....make sure you quote that number in the pic and don't tell the Chev-drivin' neanderthal behind the counter what it's for.

My bad on the repost. I'm still finding my way around the expanded site, been away for years. Thanks for the link MyDodgeDip

Although a repost, GREAT photos. I always buy a new gear and replace the gear and bushings at the same time. A little extra money, but it is worth it to me after going thru the hassle of removing the door panel, etc. Those plastic gears may look fine, but you never know when they have very fine cracks and may lose a tooth soon. Again, great pics.

Too true ISM

but "they wazn't they-are" when I went to the parts wall !!!!!!!!! (I'd used em' up) and I live 25 miles from town, after supper on a Monday night. Being a back door window I'm hoping they last for years. Besides, after just changing the entire harness on the 85 a few weeks back, I'm so darn "in practice" that I was in and out of the door in 15 minutes.

       Thanks for the kudos in the great close up photos. I'm trying to get in touch with the Macro and Super Macro features on my digital cameras , the POS (which works surprisingly well BTW)

and the good one

Ive never had problems with the gears. Always those roller things. It's nice to see the step by step pictures even tho it's one of the simplest things in the door to fix.

I didn't know it was that simple, I wish I had done the driver's side window myself now instead of paying someone else...I'll be doing this to the left rear window this summer

The last time I pulled all four door panels off I replaced the gears with ones I bought at rockauto. $20 and came with the bushings. There were little pieces of the plastic gear caught up in the grease on a couple of them. I sprayed out the area where the gear/grease goes with brake parts cleaner, and packed it with grease and the new gears. I then cleaned out the window channels and re-greased those too. It made a big difference.

Malcom, does that camera get any bedroom time too?  :evil: Make sure you don't post the wrong pics  :w00t:

You should hear the kind of money some of the Town Car owners were gettin' hosed at the stealership

(and elsewhere) to get theirs fixed. It's a bit more difficult on a Lincoln, but I discovered a shortcut and were they ever grateful !! You'd think I'd discovered penicillin. My Lincoln window repair link has had almost 29,000 hits, so I guess there was a need for a write up over there;

http://www.supermotors.net/registry/9371/27702

Glad Reggie covered it here and thanks Reggie for linking up some of the pics to your excellently detailed write up Really enjoyed the info on all the different transmissions (overdrives especially).

GREAT POST!

I used the HELP parts and they worked great for me.  I got a replacment motor once and it was TOO SLOW!!

Trick is to get ALL the broken pieces out.  I used gasoline, spray, everything, it's just tough.

Worst part of the job is the little clips break off the door panel.

Tip.  Use LOTS of duct tape.

I'm suprised you didn't create more problems. gasoline eats normal plastic
