get a holley.  theyre the easiest to work on, have the most aftermarket stuff in terms of linkages and fuel lines and such.  theyre all i use

600-650, with vacuum secondaries, a good one would be the 80783c

I hate bouncing between the two motors..but it just seems as if overall it would be more cost effective for my budget for the 318. Because it sounds like I won't need to mess with the trans stuff, and the 318s are more easy to find I'm assuming. Add to that I may once again be getting a 318 for free anyway. And since a cam is going in it, I'm going to have him rebuild it anyway regardless of it being a 318 or 360. I know ill need the 360 car pan, will I need anything like a torque converter or anything as well? And I'm still curious about getting the magnum belt and pulley setup to work with my accessories.

No, you won't need any trans stuff.

Serpentines in irregular applications are harder to deal with.

So I just get some kind of adapter to put my pulley system on it correct? And it'll line right up to the existing mounts correct?

Also...what should I do about a distributor...does that come with the ignition kit?

You should be able to put the old mounts on it.

A distributor can come with the ignition kit.

Are you talking about a Magnum 318 or an LA 318? If you want to build an LA 318 then you already have it, you won't need the one for free unless you just want an engine laying around your place.

You have the 360 heads, a good clean up on them, valve job, and new valve springs will help. You'll need a stepped piston to get the quench you need and also get a bump in compression. Get a cheap Voodoo 262ish duration cam and lifter kit (the springs should be matched to this cam), Air Gap intake, a small Holley or Edelbrock, a decent exhaust system (not sure what headers work on these), a double roller timing set and a MP ignition kit and you'll be happy. The parts are easy to get and to install. The pain will be the machine work if any is needed. You will have to get someone to do your heads if you're unsure of some other easier things on the motor. But at least you can see how it's done and get an idea so maybe you can do it yourself on a future build. Either way, I'd say around $1500 and you'll have a nice little street motor.

He means the Magnum.

Hooker Competition headers work well.

Yeah..I'm after the magnum. I think once that's in, I may try and talk dad into getting an engine stand and some clean and organized tools to learn how to tear down and rebuild the motor I have now. Maybe even get the heads worked on for better flow..and once its done, either save it, sell it, or stick it in something..maybe another M  :whist: but still. Use that to learn on.

So when do you plan on picking this engine up and getting it ready to go in your car?

It all hinges on my brother right now...if he buys this car he's looking at, dad gets the truck..and he's gonna swap for the 360..leaving me and the 318 mag. If he doesn't go for the car, then dads gonna try and find one around here and "barter"..lol. I hate that I came up with this plan after he sold his truck..I could have gotten the better 318..lol

headers:  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9040/ or http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9140/

made in the USA, vs mexico for the hookers.  are a little heavier gage tube IIRC, they fit my 5th with no mods. had cheapie hedmans before, the summits have a little better spark plug clearance

cam: get the magnum cam reground by bulletcams.com.  have them use their HR259/316 lobe for both intake and exhaust.  it'll be $150+shipping both ways.

if you pick up this camshaft snout extender, you can use a fuel pump eccentric and mechanical fuel pump on a magnum cam http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/macamsnex1.html

use the t-chain cover and accessory drive from your car. you'll need to mod the alternator bracket and space the pulleys/accessories out ~.2"

use hughes engines #1110 valve springs, the stock magnum keepers (locks) and retainers from a pair of junkyard 2.2L chrysler motors.

intake, I redrilled my heads (note, LA's are not perpendicular to the head face, but 7 degrees short of perpendicular from the head face)...did it myself on a bridgeport.

Is it necessary to redrill the heads because id need a magnum specifc intake, or is that just what you did? I know id obviously need a magnum specific intake, but I just didn't know if I could get the same numbers with a magnum style 4bbl intake.

No, he redrilled the heads to avoid having to use a Magnum specific intake. Redrilling the Magnum heads allows use of pre-Magnum LA intakes.

The intake bolt pattern is the only thing that keeps Magnum and pre-Magnum intakes from interchanging.
