Title: Bell housing/flywheel/flexplate
Post by: lsm360 on January 02, 2011, 16:39:03
More questions on my 360 swap;
Bellhousing-I am swapping in MP 360 and TCI 727...can and should I use the old bellhousing? I need to save money where I can without half-assing anything.
Flexplate and Flywheel-same questions here....I am not even sure what, if anything typically comes with a crate motor and I haven't been able to get a look at the back of the crate motor. It is pushed up against my wall in the garage right now and I haven't had time to do anything with it.
Ok, Reggie and Dariusz, you're up again!

No bellhousing on a Tourqeflite, it is an integral part of the case. Only very early iron case T-flites had a bellhousing, 1950s stuff. You'll need a 360 flex plate.

Bellhousing won't be an issue as long as you get an SB 727.
The flex plate is going to depend on the TC you use. You'll need a 727 flex plate though. If you don't have a balancer you'll need one. If this is a Magnum motor, you'll need the TC or flex plate balanced for that, if it is a pre-Magnum motor it would use a different balance on the TC or flex plate.
You'll have to chop the driveshaft or get a proper length one.

Ok, I didn't know that about bellhousing. That's good.
I am prepared to have driveshaft shortened. I remembered that from the 360 swap many years ago, but have forgotten alot of the other stuff that I left up to the mechanic.
I have a TQ picked out that is for the externally balanced 360 so I don't need to have balancing weights, also a small block 727...both are from TCI.
Thanks.

There is no flywheel. Usually the flexplate for 727 and 904 are the same, depending on the torque converter. If you are buying parts already for an externally balanced 360 you don't need the weights or do anything special. If you have the old flexplate you can re-use it as long as it's not damaged.

The 727 takes a different yoke than a 904 too.

Ok. I think I will go ahead and get a new flexplate since they are not too expensive. Yes, the torque converter I am getting is def for externally balanced 360.
Thanks for the info!

As far as yoke, I believe that is something TCI will have also, and since I am getting the trans from them, they should know which one I need, I hope. Hope they aren't too expensive. I will check their site now.

Just checked their site again....they have slip yokes and flexplates, so I will call be ordering 727, TQ, yoke and flexplate tomorrow. Ouch, that's about another $1400.

I understand everything much better now, except "no flywheel". What does the starter gear mesh with? Thanks.

It's part of the torque converter, like a giant gear that wraps around the outside of it. A flywheel is usually for manual transmission cars.

So this is a pre-Magnum 360?
A small block 727 isn't a hard animal to find. C bodies with 318s or 360s, trucks commonly (more common in the '70s, 360 wasn't used with 904 until '75, so any mild 360 application would have a 727), some B and F bodies with 360s, all 340 and 360 HPs in '74-down cars. Turned one down with my 360 and left all the parts on the trans.
The shaft is also findable. Dart with same, and if you measure it some other applications may just so happen to fit as well.

This is for my new Mopar Performance Magnum 360. I am getting a new trans and torque from TCI.

This is a balanced flexplate that allows you to use a neutral balanced torque converter. Balanced flexplates or balanced converters for regular LA 360s are weighted differently and won't work properly with Magnum 5.9/360s.
If the engine has the oil filter adapter plate already installed, you're good to go. Otherwise DO NOT use the older LA oil filter adapter on the Magnum or it will leak oil everywhere when you fire it up. Chrysler changed the blocks around 1991, and the older oil filter hardware won't bolt up properly to your Magnum . - RR
1991 This was the year of the corporate oil filter, so the 360 block was changed along with the 238 and the 318. The oil filter boss was 0.250" shorter so both the plate and adapter were modified accordingly.

Ok, good info....thanks so much Reggie...any info that may be helpful that comes to mind, feel free to PM or post here please...thanks!

So was this done on '92 V6/318 Magnums and 92 360 TBIs?

If you get balanced torque converter the same time as the transmission they should be able to sell you the right one for what you are using it for without having to use the special flex plate Reggie posted. Either way will balance it off right, I never used the B&M flexplate because it was just cheaper and easier to deal with the weighted torque converter.
I never knew that about the oil filter adapter. Interesting.

Yep. The change occurred for 1991, so all 1991 and newer blocks were affected. - RR

Ok, I ordered the TCI 727 trans, torque converter, and new speedo gear. I went ahead and ordered fluid from them to, along with an additional filter and pan gasket for a 500 mile change of fluid as recommended. Spent $1600....good stuff is expensive!

You can use the original speedo gear. Make sure the one you ordered matches the kind of cable you have or plan on using. If you still have the original cable the gear with the stick that seems to be the most common kind to find won't work.

Well, I already ordered it. Figured even if the old one worked I would put a new one in now anyway. Might have to send that back.
Thanks.

This might be a little late for you, but i would buy the flex plate from mopar that allows the use of fuel injection, just in case you get creative in the future.

I appreciate the thought but I already did order the flex plate. I am going to be so broke after this anyway, it would be a real long time before I could even think of going to FI.
