Causes of Overheating

Car overheating?  The usual suspects are:

• Insufficient coolant - possibly due to a leak somewhere
• Air in the cooling system
• Leaking head gasket
• Leaking intake gasket
• Improper coolant mix (should usually be 50/50)
• Contaminated coolant (rust or oil)
• Bad radiator cap
• Bad thermostat
• Clogged radiator
• Clogged block water jackets (engine needs to be flushed)
• Bad hoses or no spring in hoses (they can collapse and restrict coolant flow)
• Loose fan belt
• Defective clutch fan (allows excessive fan freewheeling)
• Bad water pump
• Missing fan shroud
• Exhaust system blockage - clogged muffler,cat or pre-cat
• Incorrect ignition timing
• Lean air/fuel mixture
• Fan too far away from radiator - should be within a couple inches away
• If air conditioning - dirt, leaves or trash in A/C condensor
• Cracked head
• Cracked block
