M Body Front Frame Interchange
« on: October 07, 2021, 20:13:19 »

I have to replace a section of the front left frame on my 81 Lebaron coupe.  It rusted from the inside out.  I have seen many a car now with only rust in this frame rail and nowhere else.   It was a problem area since I purchased this car.  The rest of the car is completely rust free.  Probably some left over salt from the original owner since it was winter driven for a bit when new.

Aside from M body rails, are donor frame rails from Aspens or Miradas the same?  There are simply none around in our local area to look at anymore.

My understanding is that all the F/M/J-body cars share exactly the same yes, I think you should be able to source one and re-use on you M-body.

Damn...I feel for ya!

My coupe had that weak-spot issue...we did the AutoRustTech cap replace...made it for a much stiffer setup.

I am curious though: could you literally cut up some thick sheet-metal and weld up a cap like that to go over your rail, or is this a "must replace" type of a rust through damage?

I can tell you an '80 Aspen interchanges with an '88 M body if that's any help.

I took mine to an Amish metal yard here in Pennsylvania and they welded in what looks almost factory and got me to keep driving my 1980 Diplomat.  I had a hard time locating those weld-on frame caps that seem unavailable anymore.
