85 Chrysler 5th Ave Rear Differential Advise
« on: February 17, 2014, 22:00:13 »

Hi Gang, I am new to this site and need some advise Please.
I handed down an 85 5th Ave to my son. The other night he lost drive and the right axle had moved out from the axle housing.
We took it apart and found the c-clip had fallen out. Here is where the fun begins.
We need to remove the carrier assembly from the axle housing.
We removed the axles but we can not remove any of the spider gears, the cross pin bolt broke. The bolt was removed but the insert is in the cross pin. We can spin the cross pin yet we can not slide it through the carrier assembly. So we want to remove the carrier assembly. I removed the 2 bearing caps but we can not pull the carrier assembly out. It moves towards me some but not all the way. Is there something else holding on to the bearings?? I saw an old training video that talks about the 7.25 rear and it mentioned that a tool was required which was inserted in the axle housing which loosened some adjuster. Is this system used on my 85 rear axle.
Any help would be appreciated.

there is an adjuster on each side, IIRC an a-body torsion bar fits it perfectly to back em out to pull the center chunk

I made a tool using a large truck 7/8 hex lug nut, and welding a large extension to it. IT has been awhile, but i think i had to grind the hex down to fit perfectly, and i rounded the front edge to slid in easier.
If you can't/or don't want to make your own, i found a few. $20-$30 w/shipping

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-CHRYSLER-9-25-8-25-7-25-AXLE-TOOL-SPANNER-REAR-END-WRENCH-ADJUSTER-CARRIER-/141180393997?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20df01da0d&vxp=mtr

and a slightly more expensive one, with long shaft end

here is a nice how-to link, tool works for 7.25,8.25; and 9.25 rears

Thanks all for the replies. My son and I decided it was time to put the 5th Ave to rest. It was a sad day for my son and I. We had a lot of fun with that car. We discovered the main ring had a broken tooth. Too much money and too cold to be working on this.
Thanks again M326697 - Mike t.

cheap fix, another 7.25 in a junkyard or off craigslist is about $175 and an hour or two to put it in

trust me if I can work outside in the winter in canada, so can anyone else

Too bad, complete 7.25 axles are all but given away.  That's what I did with mine.

I would give you a complete 7.25 out of a 85 Dip if you were close enough.

Same here, in central NC. Have a 2.7 7-1/4 complete with nothing wrong with it- took it out years ago and it just sits on a '63 B fender.

I'm at the point where I have to decide to put money into the 7.25" axle for my Valiant.  It's noisy.  But the only other choice is really an a body 8.75" which is really expensive.  Or to swap to big bolt pattern and waste the money I have invested in small bolt wheels.

I hate the 7.25" axle.  Have I said that before
