Y Pipe removal
« on: April 20, 2008, 08:39:05 »

getting ready to just do the Y pipe swap. Looking for tips on removing the old one. I will be doing this in my garage, no air tools available. Figure I'll start soaking threads with PB blaster. I have all sorts of sockets, extensions, breaker bar, torch.

Will I be removing the manifold to Y pipe nuts all from the top of the car or will I need to get underneath too?

part number 440047, anything else needed?

Those bolts are supposed to have keepers at the top so one person can do it from the bottom.  But typically they are rusted out and you will need someone at the top with a wrench....Be careful with a  torch under there, have the garage door open and someone standing by with a fire extinguisher and a charged garden hose...

If the bolts are badly rusted, use a six point socket and tighten until they break. No sense fighting with them.

From the top or from the bottom it doesnt make a difference just do whatever you have to to get it off. You need a wrench and sockets of some sort to get to the other side. Mine didnt haev anything to stop stuff from turning.

I was just going to PB blast them today, had the car up on jack stands for grease fittings. The driver side bolts are so easy to get to I decided to put a wrench to them.

The one towards the front of the car started to turn pretty easily then the holder piece broke. So I put a wrench up top to hold the bolt and started going again and the bolt snapped. Decided I'm just going to tighten the rest until they break. The rear one sucks because the angle dosnt allow a extension and socket to get to it. It just barely gets on there, so I decide to get my rubber mallet and see if I can tap the socket on a little better, couple light taps and theres a bolt breaking sound and the exhaust drops a little. The bolt spins freely now, havent verified it actualy broke from being tapped on, if so I got pretty lucky.

Tip for the drivers side, just take the tire off and you can see the nuts and bolts, you dont even have to get under the car.

Passenger side is a different story, one bolt faces up, the other down. The cat on that side is right in the way, it looks like I should be able to get at the one from the bottom, there's so much crap on the driver side I cant find the other one from the top yet.

Oh and these cars have the manifold heat blocker things? I thought mopar got rid of those by the 80's.

When I did it I thought it was the driver side that was hard to do. For the passenger side one you can take the plate off inside the wheel well and get to part of it from in there. They all have the valve thing on the passenger side.

so when you replace it do you have the main cat or not?

Yes it is, unless you have headers keep it on, or do your best to cap it.

I already have the air pump gone and both lines capped.

I dont want any cats at all, we should see tommorrow how long this maremont part is. If its not going get past the cat I might see how much a shop will charge for me for the section with a couple of 15 degree bends in it. Other option is to build something from the peices of pipe at advance but that could get ugly since I have no welding equipment.

ok the 440047 goes to the main cat, I wonder if one of the other part numbers in our library goes past the cat. Maybe the lebaron ones and still might fit on a M?

I'm gonna cut the cat off, spend the $5 for a piece of flexpipe and have a shop bend me some in the shape of the flexpipe.

Do I need any particular nuts/bolts to reatach the y pipe. Can I go to home depot and grab anything or does it need to be a certain material?

Scrap yard.  I would think you might be able to get $30-$40 for the main cat and pre-cats.

And don't you have smog checks on Ohio?
