Early Torqueflite

Below are pictures of an early Torqueflite three-speed automatic transmission, which was designated as the A-488.  The first Torqueflites appeared late in the 1956 model year.  Initially, Torqueflites were controlled by pushbuttons on the dashboard. Unlike modern day aluminum housing Torqueflites, this early model had a cast iron case that bolted to a separate bellhousing, and no lock for park. The tailshaft was made from aluminum though.  The cast iron units were phased out by 1962.  These units were said to have been extremely heavy.

Photos:

  • A-488 with bellhousing removed
  • A-488 with oil pan removed.  Notice that unlike modern torqueflites, the A-488 case takes a rectangular oil pan.
