30 MPG Fifth?!?!
« on: August 15, 2008, 14:42:33 »

The 84 I recently picked up has been getting an average of 26-30 MPG over the 1000 miles I drove over the last week (highway of course).  I really do not understand why....are the 84's set-up better, any input from someone that gets this good of mileage is appreciated.  Lean burn computer in place on the 84, little bit of a rough idle but runs like a top.  Hole in the muffler, smog pump froze at some point and is disconnected, other than that, a normal, somewhat rough $400 fifth ave.

Check under the rear bumper..might be a Civic stuck under there that's been giving you a free push.

Wow, that much better mileage by ditching the smog pump?  I know what is going bye bye on the 86 then.....I can transplant it in the 84 so I can get the smog passed, then it will be installed on a shelf somewhere (out of the car of course)

They dont take a lot. Cars with them get good power and gas mileage too. Thats what its suppsed to be like when everything is adjusted properly.

Best I have ever gotten in the 86 is 22, cruise works in that one when it wants to, but I am pretty good at keeping it at speed.  Cruise doesnt work in the 84 at all.

I got 25 in my fifth ave a couple times all highway and driving gently.  I dunno about 30 though, unless your roads are really flat and you found the "sweet spot".     What size tires are on it? did it have a rear swap done? maybe the speedo is a little off and its putting more miles on for a tank.

Nope car is bone stock...stock tire size too.  Not a bad road, but mountains.....elevations up and down, form 2000 to 8000 feet.  I get about 17-18 on city driving.  On the 30 mpg runs I kept it strictly at 65, sometimes less and kept my foot out of it on the uphill runs, let it slow to 50 sometimes on those, just eased it.....maybe just had the perfect spot on it.  Thought it was a fluke, but when I got 27 on the next fill-up I was pleasantly surprised and happy.

I don't know, it is possible in my book. The LeBaron was averaging about 27mpg when I took it from IL to TX, and that was with the world's worst friggin' alignment ever. Not to mention bad AR roads and my heavy right foot, too..
