440 in a early A-body?
« on: May 30, 2012, 13:35:39 »

Just passed by an early ('59-'62) Valiant wagon that looks to be for sale...could a 440 fit in one without butchering it?

Never mind, got another look at it. It looks like a early '60 Studebaker Lark

No, it would take a lot of work with a gas wrench to make it fit if it was a Valiant. A very narrow engine bay on that creature.

You got to cut into them basically.

Even in a '70s A you're not unlikely to have to cut some of the fenderwell for exhaust clearance with an RB.

Yep- a friend just put a 413 in a '69 Valiant, "Bang-for-the-buck" hot rod. Unless you are going to shell out bucks for TTI's or Schumacher's (made by "Headers by Ed" headers, buy/find the C-body (and maybe B, not sure) manifolds, you will be opening fender wells in even the '67-up A-bodies. Surgery is required in the early-As'...seen it done twice, and both guys flat out said it was a ton of work

In '64-5 the  A's engine bay got wider and the swap is pretty easy, earlier is not much fun although it has been done.

Interesting. Knew the suspension was revised in '64 but never heard that before. Prime appeal of '64/5s to most is the V8 stuff. Though still lots of strippers for inexpensive seeing as how they tend to draw the cruiser crowd more than anything.
