updates on my Fifth Avenue 84 and speakers/radio question
« on: January 03, 2018, 18:03:49 »

Update : the car is now sitting under a tarp for the winter , covered with snow
I just purchased a distributor and ignition box kit from Summit Racing, I'm watching an intake manifold on Ebay that I will probably get in the next few days and I started looking at Thermoquad carburetor from 360 engines of the 70's
so bye bye lean burn system

now a few questions
speakers in the rear are 5x7 right ?
is this a 2 DIN unit or 1 DIN and half ?

if 2 DIN this a very rare SUBARU radio that I want to install and you think it will fit ?

I have an external MP3 player that connect straight into the external CD charger port and controlled by the radio + a 4 x 120W RMS vintage amplifier to go with it

do you have any pictures of speakers installed in the front doors ?

I think the rear speakers are 4X6 but you can make other sizes fit. The radio is din and a half.
When you get the Thermoquad make sre you get the smaller size one, 360s could be either one and the larger one is too big for a 318.

This is the size for comparison of a Mopar C/D/Cassette.

Notice the tab up top for installation, there another kitty corner at the bottom.

I'm thinking if you got a Metra aftermarket install kit/faceplate, it might work.

I'm pretty sure the rear speakers are 5x7

If the original radio has an integrated clock, the AM/FM/CD player Ice showed is a direct bolt in and the plugs match.
If the original radio does not have an integrated clock you'll need a wiring adapter, but it fits the dash fine.

I can't remember when the integrated clocks started on these cars, I think it was 84.

Buy a new head unit from Crutchfield or something.  You can get units that'll do 200 watts of output right from the deck and have an array of inputs to select from for under $100.

Cabin speakers on these cars are tough to get decent sound quality from.  Fronts are 2.5" circular and the rear are 5x7" oval.  Highs the mid-range you can get, but forget about low range.  For a speaker to do that properly it has to be of sufficient size and have the underside in an enclosure.  None of the speakers in the interior are enclosed and there is no room to do it.  Best you can do without any fab work is install decent speakers in the factory locations, install a pair of low range filtering caps in the front and use a small sub woofer in the trunk to fill out the low range.

Might want to rethink the thermoquad too while you're at it.  I don't have any experience with them myself, but I had a friend that was trained by Chrysler in the 70's to work on them.  Extremely temperamental carbs.  Always been partial to vacuum secondary Holley carbs.

I like the T-quad because it's considered a Mopar carb, and sounds GREAT! But not the easiest to adjust as MarkM states. If you don't care about the legendary Mopar carb status and that beautiful sound the secondaries make when they open on a T-quad, you're probably better off with an edlebrock (I think 1405 or 1406).

Bummer I had that same unit in my 1999 Dodge Avenger and I trashed it when I put the aftermarket

Yes it has, that's one thing I'm sure about my car

still not sure if it's a good idea or not but its mine and I had $43 ebay bucks to spend before the end of the month , so my final cost was really low and I'm still looking for an intake manifold

the lean burn is already problematic on my Fifth Avenue, the computer was replaced at least once , the hose for the fuel evap is cut with an hacksaw by a mechanic and I don't know it was done
when I got the car the carburetor was all the way off the fast idle was always turned on making the base idle at least above 1200 rpm I manage to settle it but I want it out of the car as soon as the car is legally back on the road

Nothing beats a Thermoquad when it is tuned right, the small primaries help economy and off idle performance. Then the large secondaries are there when you need them, and they flow great.

Problem is no one knows how to work on them, so people think they bog and run poorly. So they switch to a Holley that anyone can work on. I don't blame people for making that choice, but it makes me sad to know they won't ever see the real benefits of the Thermoquad.

On a side note, when I had my 1988 Gran fury back in the 1990's I had a friend who was a GM addict. He was able to tune that car and make it run very nice. It's all about finding someone who knows their way around the carb.
