Any body know much about the St.regis and its Chrysler counterpart? I've noticed a couple around , not quite as common as m bodies thoguh. We these cars really any good? There weren't made for very long and were I live not many late 70's early 80's cars lasted long (lots of road salt!). Just wondering if it's worth a fleet of these over the m bodies or stay away from.

It's an R body.  Longer than an M and could be ordered with a 400 big block.  Front brakes are 11.75 and can be swapped into an M to replace the puny 10" brakes - just need the rotors and caliper adapters.  Neat cars.

360- 4 was largest engine available. Police cars drive much better then civilian models.

I had a '79 St. Regis before my 5th. It handled well. Always had to get parts for a '79 Monaco (which the St. Regis replaced in '79). No Monaco's were built, but even Chrysler parts department had to look them up as a Monaco.

You sure about that?  Then is it the Newport that I'm thinking off?  I know for sure R body cars could be ordered with a 400 up until '78.

We're these cars any good body wise or were they prone to rust like some of the late 70's cars?

I know the bumpers were prone to rotting quickly, and a few other quality control issues, but also were named favorite alltime Mopar squad car when equipped with the 360-4 in a poll of Police Officers.


Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler Police Cars 1979-1994[/size] notes that the 360 powered St. Regis, Newport, and Gran Fury were the fastest and best performing police cars of the era. In the book’s survey, officers wrote that the 360 powered 1980 St. Regis was the best Mopar police car of all time

I'm quite certain also that the 400 was not available in these cars.

"Many of these 1979-1981 police cars were sold with the 318 V8; others had a 360 engine with four-barrel Carter Thermoquad carburetor. Police cars, unlike civilian ones, had the Lean Burn computer behind the glove box at first, then above the parking foot-brake".

Great cars, but trim parts can be a PITA to find or worth getting when they turn up.

The Dodge St. Regis never caught on for some reason.  I read that they languished unsold on Chrysler "sales bank" lots.  It would have been fun to have one in the 80s.  If you told someone you had a Dodge they would have expected a K car, not a full sized boat like this!

R body started in 1979, with slant 6, 318 and 360 engines. R body is fairly easy to retrofit with a big block because it's a 73-74 B body under the skin.
The 1978 big cars, like the Newport, were still C bodies and were the last of the big blocks.
