Intermittent Spark
« on: October 22, 2020, 10:29:12 »

Lately my 85 Diplomat Salon is giving me a no start condition. I checked for spark and there was none. The mechanic replaced cap and rotor and "Rosie" was okay for a while. Went out one morning and she didn't start. Just cranked. I got out, removed the distributor cap and rotor, jimmied it a bit and put it back on. It started and was good for about a week. Let it sit for a few days, attempted to start it and, no spark again. It's a 318 2V civilian model with electronic spark control. Is there anything obvious I should be looking for? Thanks for any assistance.

Wondering if your coil is okay. Next time remove coil wire and lay it close to clean metal, and crank and look for spark jumping to see if you have good spark from coil. That's an easy and free test to eliminate one thing.

The pickup in the distributor can be intermittent.

Next time it won't start, there is likely a no spark diagnostic procedure in the fa tory service manual to try. Probably need the manual and a volt meter.
